Artist Talk, May 2, 2026, 1 pm, M Fine Arts Galerie
Join us for a public conversation with Enrique Durand-Methol on the occasion of his solo exhibition HETEROCHROMIA, currently on view at M Fine Arts Galerie in Boston. The talk will take place on Saturday, May 2, at 1:00 p.m., and will be hosted by curator and artist Meclina Gomes.
Visitors are welcome to arrive early for a walkthrough of the exhibition. The artist will also be available for informal conversation following the talk.
About the exhibition
HETEROCHROMIA brings together a sustained body of work exploring LGBTQ and transgender identity through painting. The exhibition engages questions of visibility, embodiment, kinship, and the systems—medical, social, and cultural—that shape how bodies are seen and understood. Drawing on art-historical references, religious iconography, and symbolic visual language, the works reframe the body as a site of negotiation: between self-definition and external interpretation, vulnerability and control, presence and absence.
At a moment when questions of gender identity and visibility are at the center of national and global discourse, HETEROCHROMIA offers a deeply personal and visually rigorous exploration of these themes.
About the artist
Enrique Durand-Methol is a Cuban-American artist based in Boston. His work explores identity, gender, and embodiment through a distinctive visual language that combines figuration, symbolism, and references to both classical and contemporary imagery. In addition to his studio practice, he is a Boston Public Schools teacher at the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science, where he teaches AP Biology. He holds a PhD in microbiology from Tufts University, and his scientific background informs his engagement with the body as both a biological and cultural construct.
About the host
Meclina Gomes is a Boston-based curator and artist whose work centers on contemporary practices that engage identity, community, and social context. Her curatorial approach emphasizes dialogue and accessibility, creating spaces for artists and audiences to engage meaningfully with complex themes. In this conversation, she brings her perspective as both curator and artist to a discussion of HETEROCHROMIA and its broader context.
